Join Asia Society Texas to welcome Bloomberg Chief Economist Tom Orlik for a discussion of the key trends that are driving the economies of Asia and an exploration of the major themes that will continue to impact Asia’s economic performance. The program will focus on Asia’s energy outlook, the continued volatility of China’s property development and real estate market, and impacts that a potential U.S. recession would have on Asia.

Orlik will be joined in conversation by Eagle Global Advisors co-founder and Senior Partner Eddie Allen, PhD, J.P. Morgan Private Bank Vice-Chairman Martyn Goossen, and Baker Institute nonresident fellow Deborah Byers to examine the major themes that are shaping Asia's economic forecast.

About the Speakers

Edward “Eddie” R. Allen is a co-founder and Senior Partner of Eagle Global Advisors, an investment advisory firm based in Houston, Texas. In addition to serving as a co-manager of the Eagle MLP Strategy Fund, he serves on the investment committee for the Eagle Renewable Energy Infrastructure ETF (symbol: RNWZ). Eddie received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago and his B.S.E. in Engineering from Princeton University. Eddie holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is also a member the CFA Society of Houston. Before entering the investment advisory business, Eddie served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Houston.

Eddie currently serves as Treasurer of the Asia Society Texas Center and is on the board of the Asia Society Global organization. He also currently serves on the boards of the Menil Collection and the Chinquapin School.  He is a past board member of St. John’s School and past Chair and President of the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.

Martyn E. Goossen is Vice Chairman of the J.P. Morgan Private Bank. Marty has over 40 years of experience in financial services, nearly all of which has been in the wealth management field. The majority of his career was spent working in Asia. Marty and his wife, Kathy, moved to Hong Kong with Citibank in 1978 and transferred to Tokyo in 1984. Marty joined JPMorgan Chase in Tokyo in 1988 and remained in Asia until 2006, when he moved to Houston to take the position as head of the Houston Private Bank and President of the Houston Region. In 2017, Marty was appointed to Vice Chairman of the J.P. Morgan Private Bank focusing on the south region of the United States. Marty has undertaken a number of civic responsibilities in Houston. He serves on the boards of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Asia Society Texas Center, Central Houston Inc., and the Houston Zoo.

He is also a member of the Council of Overseers at Rice University’s Jones School of Business and is a Director of the Singapore American School Foundation. Marty received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1977 and a B.S. in Economics from Union College in Schenectady, New York.

Tom Orlik is Bloomberg’s Chief Economist, based in Washington DC. Previously, Tom was the Chief Asia economist for Bloomberg and China economics correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, based in Beijing. Prior to a decade in China, he worked at the British Treasury, European Commission, and International Monetary Fund. He is the author of Understanding China’s Economic Indicators (FT Press) and China: The Bubble that Never Pops (OUP).

About the Moderator

Deborah Byers is a nonresident fellow at the Baker Institute Center for Energy Studies. She formally served as a partner at Ernst & Young LLP and retired in July of 2022 after 36 years of service in public accounting. From July 2018 to her retirement, she was EY’s America’s Industry Leader, overseeing the markets and growth strategy across its primary industry markets, including energy, industrials & automotive; consumer technology; telecom, media & entertainment; health care & life sciences; real estate; private equity and government. Byers served EY’s Houston office managing partner and U.S. energy leader from July 2013 to July 2018, and managing partner of the Southwest Region Strategy & Transactions business unit from July 2008 to July 2013. In these roles, she was a leader in global energy markets and worked with corporations and investment funds in all phases of energy investment, with a key focus on U.S. shale and global LNG export market transactions.

Byers holds a B.B.A. from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and is a certified public accountant.
